Introduction

Are you enthusiastic about working with big data, and do you want to enhance your skills in (pharmaco) epidemiological research? Then we would like to meet you!

What you do

Both opioids and benzodiazepines are highly addictive substances and have sedating effects. When used alone, they can depress the respiratory system, impair cognition, slow response times and increase the risk of falling. It is known that using both drugs together can be very dangerous. Therefore in several guidelines clinicians are warned not to prescribe them together. Nonetheless some studies have shown that patients frequently combine these drugs. However, European studies on this topic are lacking. Moreover it is not clear what the consequences of this concurrent prescriptions are in patients with a hip or knee replacement.

In the Netherlands annually >65.000 patients undergo arthroplasty surgery, hence (chronic) opioid use in combination with benzodiazepines may be substantial, with a major impact on patients’ lives and society. Therefore with this project we will evaluate opioid prescriptions in combination with benzodiazepines patients in with a hip or knee replacement. In this project you will make use of several epidemiological and statistical methods to answer the research questions. Data from the Dutch Arthroplasty register will be linked to the Dutch Foundation of Pharmacy (SFK), including over 300.000 arthroplasties. Within this project there will be a close collaboration with the department of Orthopaedics, the department Clinical Epidemiology, the department of Anaesthesiology and the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS). You will enhance your methodological skills in pharmoco epidemiology, author publications, support in writing grants and guide students.
