Your job
Are you passionate about cytoplasmic genetics in plants? Excited to uncover the mechanisms underlying the maternal inheritance of plastids and mitochondria? If so, we invite you to join our newly established Cytoplasmic Genetics Group at
Wageningen University & Research
(WUR).
We are currently seekinga postdoctoral researcher
who is enthusiastic about contributing to
the ERC-funded project: “Control of Cytoplasmic Inheritance in Plants”
Our research
Besides the nucleus, plastids and mitochondria also contain genetic materials (known as cytoplasmic genomes) essential for key cellular processes including energy conversion and metabolism. Since these organelles cannot form de novo, they must be inherited from one generation to the next. What makes this process unique? Unlike nuclear DNA, which comes from both parents, plastid and mitochondrial genomes are inherited exclusively from the mother. Despite being known for decades, the molecular mechanisms behind this maternal inheritance remain largely unknown.
Our research aims to uncover these mechanisms using genetics, molecular biology, and advanced microscopy. Understanding cytoplasmic inheritance could lead to valuable applications in agriculture and plant breeding.
For more details about the research, please visit our homepage and read the related publication:
You will contribute to the ERC-funded project “Control of Cytoplasmic Inheritance in Plants”.
Specific tasks include:
- Develop experimental tools to control cytoplasmic inheritance patterns.
- Establish advanced imaging techniques for
tracking of cytoplasmic genomes.
In addition to specific research tasks, we would also like to provide a platform for you to take initiative and develop into an independent scientist. As a postdoc, you will have the opportunity to shape your project’s direction.
You will
- Collaborate with experts from various disciplines and contribute innovative ideas to the field.
- Mentor MSc and PhD students and get yourself prepared for the future supervisory role.
- Attend workshops and conferences to present your findings and further your development as a well-rounded scientist.
Your qualities
- You hold a PhD degree in Plant Science, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- You have published in preprints or peer-reviewed journals as a first author or co-author.
- You have hands-on experience with microscopy and molecular biology approaches.
- Experience with
and/or
Arabidopsis thaliana
is advantageous.
- Expertise in cytoplasmic genome editing and/or genomic loci fluorescence imaging is a plus.
Please highlight and elaborate on this in your motivation letter.
- You are creative and equipped with problem-solving skills.
- You are an enthusiastic team player with strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
Our Group
You will join the newly establishedCytoplasmic Genetics Group

Laboratory of Plant Physiology
at WUR. As one of the founding members of this new group, you will work closely with MSc, PhD students, and the group leader
Kin Pan Chung
over the coming years.
Additionally, the
Plant Science Group
at WUR provides an open, diverse, and inspiring environment for multidisciplinary research at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and physics, offering extensive opportunities for training and collaborations.
