Your job
Are you interested in unravelling the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of environmental toxicology? Are you enthusiastic about teaching the latest insights of environmental toxicology to the next generation of toxicologists, including PhD students and postdocs? Then our current vacancy as assistant professor within the professor track of the recognition & reward system of Wageningen University (WU) may well be the next step in your professional career. We are looking for a new colleague to continue our renowned research into the mechanisms by which chemicals in the environment cause toxicity in wildlife.What are you going to do?
You will work as a scientist (equivalent to assistant professor (UD), in the professor track of the Recognition & Rewarding system of WU) in the field of molecular/biochemical driven environmental toxicology to strengthen the Toxicology chair group in the department of Agrotechnology & Food Sciences (AFSG) at WU. The position includes both research and teaching responsibilities. You will co-develop our group's strong research position in the field of environmental toxicology together with our research assistants and tenured senior staff. Your strong empirical background and experience in designing, analysing and reporting high quality environmental toxicological studies will come in handy. Teaching courses in the field of environmental toxicology and supervising BSc, MSc and PhD students will be one of your main tasks. Your previous success in applying for research grants and writing impactful scientific publications will help acquire competitive grants at the chair group and maintain the chair group’s research standing.The Toxicology chair group’s research focusses on mechanistic food and environmental toxicology. You will actively contribute to the development of mode of action-based approaches and tools to characterise hazards and risks of chemicals across species. This includes development of new molecular biomarkers of toxicity and non-animal test methods including in vitro models, computational tools like TK-TD and PBK-based QIVIVE models, and species-specific (quantitative) AOP approaches for environmental impact assessments. It is our ambition to translate our mechanistic understanding of toxicological processes into risk assessments for environmental and human health using a One Health approach.
You will be fully supported in your academic development with training courses and coaching.
Your qualities
You are an enthusiastic scientist and a team player, devoted to research and education in the field of environmental toxicology. You have a strong experimental background and experience in designing, conducting and analysing high quality toxicological studies.You have:
- a PhD in environmental toxicology or related field, with a molecular biology focus and at least 3-5 years of post-PhD work experience within the field of environmental toxicology and preferably are registered as European Registered Toxicologist;
- excellent experimental skills and have a clear overview of the current state of the art of mechanism-based environmental toxicology;
- affinity with computational modelling, like toxicokinetic/toxicodynamic or physiologically based kinetic modelling;
- experience in co-supervising PhD students;
- excellent English writing skills and the ability to publish high quality scientific papers;
- experience in teaching (under)graduate courses and holding a University Teaching Qualification (or the willingness to obtain such a qualification within two year);
