Job description
Erasmus Research Services is looking for data stewards within the domain of humanities, behavioural sciences, law, language and culture. From a central embedding within the EUR digital competence centre (coordinated by Erasmus Research Services) you will be seconded to one or two of the EUR-faculty research support teams providing direct support on research data management to researchers.

Your work
  • As a Data Steward you will inform, advise and support researchers and managers, throughout the research data life cycle (collection, management, storage and publication) in accordance with international RDM standards.
  • You will initiate, orchestrate and actively support the institutional development of research data management workflows and best practices, ensuring an effective and client-focused research data organisation. These will range from Data Management Planning (DMP) of research projects, to research data curation and the selection of tools and storage solutions.
  • As sparring partner of the researchers and faculty research support teams of 1 or 2 faculties, you will contribute to the development and implementation of research data management policies and guidelines (e.g. data purchasing), and discipline-specific protocols, and you will assist with procedures for compliancy checks and grant proposals.
  • You will explore and analyse relevant international trends in research data management, and develop and run training activities and (user) workshops tailored towards researchers’ needs and inspire researchers to participate.
  • You will co-ordinate the data management activities in conjunction with the relevant administrative and service departments of faculties, participate in the EUR Data Steward training programme and the Data Stewardship capacity tool, contribute to knowledge exchange (privacy and funder requirements, open science and FAIR developments, EUR services, etc.) and assist other data stewards when possible.
  • You will act as a liaison between researchers and the EUR support units, mainly Erasmus Research Services (ERS), the Library, CIO/IT and to international and national stakeholders (other local DCC’s, project partners, funders, networks, etc.).
  • You will contribute to EUR wide RDM projects, for example the development and upkeep of an RDM service desk including web portal and DMP templates and protocols, you will protect interests of faculties in back-office projects like infrastructure developments and support roll-out of these new services.
Requirements
What we are looking for
  • A proactive problem-solver, results-oriented, analytical and highly sociable team player, with strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, able to interact with different offices and other stakeholders connected to EUR, both inside and outside the Netherlands.
  • A demonstrably outstanding and driven organiser with an academic background (MSc / MA or PhD degree), preferably in social sciences, behavioural sciences or humanities.
  • Experience with research methodologies and the way research data are managed in the field of the academic disciplines mentioned above, a broad understanding of how data and software underpin high-quality research.
  • Preferred experience with handling research data following protocols, documenting research data using standards, sharing data across institutional boundaries and working according to Data Management Plans or protocols.
  • Affinity and empathy with academic research and education, ICT skills and familiarity with ICT and internet-driven organisational and work processes.
  • Experience with policy work is a plus, especially with initiating, developing, implementing, and seeing to fruition guidelines and projects.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, also under time pressure, ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent spoken and written proficiency in the English language (C1/C2).
Willingness to participate in the EUR Data Steward training programme and commitment to high-quality, client-oriented service delivery.
Conditions of employment
An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The start date of this position is January 2021 and you will be based at Erasmus Research Services and one or two faculties in Rotterdam and possibly The Hague. The successful candidate will be offered a full-time, one year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam. The contract can be extended in case of a positive assessment or turned into a fixed employment contract.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at a maximum of CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of € 3.746,- and a maximum of € 5.127,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits, like a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus sports center and the University library.

EUR offers a Dual Career Programme (DCP) to assist the life partners of new academic staff (on pay-roll) in finding employment in The Netherlands. The programme is offered in close cooperation with nearby universities of Delft and Leiden.

Erasmus Research Services (ERS) has recently been established as a support organization for researchers in order to achieve the university’s ambitions on research and impact. ERS is there to help researchers during the preparation and execution of research projects. Therefore, a comprehensive set of services is currently being set up encompassing amongst others, grant support, business development & knowledge transfer, data management support, legal support, ethics, open science and responsible research intelligence. ERS works in close collaboration with research support staff at faculties and other EUR central services. We do so by setting up support communities under coordination of ERS.
