Internship Management And Resilience In Myanmar
Internship position on Water Management & Resilience in Myanmar Location The internship is expected to take place at home in the Netherlands due to unclear COVID19 situation. Delfse Poort, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (Arcadis Project Office 70/1 1C-1D, Pipelone street, Yangon, Myanmar) Period Starting early March 2021 – 5 or 6 months Supervision Tanya Huizer in Yangon, Myanmar / Rotterdam, the Netherlands Context Cities in Asia are growing and developing fast, Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, is one of those cities in transition. The effects of rapid urbanization and the impacts of climate change are increasingly visible. The trends associated with urbanization and climate change challenge cities worldwide to cope with future shocks and stresses. Integral part of the new strategy of Arcadis is a focus on resiliency. Besides rapid growing urban areas is also the Ayeyarwady Delta of Myanmar a vulnerable area with many ongoing and upcoming water and resilience projects. Recently Arcadis got awarded a project to develop a water data collection plan for the delta. Also, new projects are expected related to freshwater availability, water-food nexus, groundwater management, river engineering, coastal and riverine floods / flood risk management and so on. Being part of the Yangon team, you will be in close and regular contact with our 4 colleagues based in Myanmar as well as other Dutch junior colleagues with international ambitions and other Myanmar and Dutch students in Arcadis. Role The role of the intern is diverse and requires a pro-active, flexible and open-minded attitude. The internship includes conducting different studies related to data collection, field surveys and measurements, desk research, Delft3D Modelling (if interested), GIS mapping, assessment of feasibility of water security measures, writing and drafting reports, note taking, preparing presentations, and analyzing the gathered information. Other activities include networking, training, business development, and organizing events. In addition to the development of your substantive knowledge, you get the opportunity to work on your soft skills. There are multiple occasions when you can practice such skills, allowing you to develop professionally as well as personally. When possible, you will be involved in other relevant project activities within Arcadis as well on an ad-hoc basis, this provides you with a thorough insight into the work of an Arcadis consultant. Next to gaining insights, your ideas or suggestions can contribute to real projects. The main focus for your internship will be decided in February 2021 and also depends on your interest and capabilities. Requirements
- The candidate has finished the first three years of an academic training (WO / BSc) and is following a master program (MSc) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, International Land and Water Management (or comparable) at a University in The Netherlands.
- Basic knowledge of water management
- Cultural sensitivity and flexibility are a must.
- International working experience is a pre.
- Network skills and a business-like mindset are a pre.
- Affinity with teamwork
- Experience with R Studio and/or GIS is a pre
- Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking would be appreciated.
- Good language skills in English for communication and reporting is required.
- Understanding and speaking Dutch is required. Financial arrangements Arcadis has a standard financial arrangement for MSc internships of 450 EUR/month. In case of travelling to Myanmar, you are responsible yourself for the costs for accommodation, transport, insurances and so on.
