How much does a laboratory technician earn?
The salary of a laboratory technician varies depending on experience, education and the sector you work in. For newly graduated laboratory technicians at secondary vocational education level (MBO), the salary is often between
€2,400
and
€2,800
gross per month. Did you complete higher professional education (HBO)? In that case, the starting salary is often slightly higher, between
€2,800
and
€3,200
gross per month.
As you gain more experience, your salary can increase. For experienced laboratory technicians with a secondary vocational background (MBO), the salary can rise to between
€3,000
and
€3,600
per month. With a higher professional education background (HBO), the salary can rise to between
€3,500
and
€4,500
per month.
Youth wages may still apply to newly graduated MLO students (secondary laboratory education), which means that their salary may still be slightly lower at a younger age. Ultimately, factors such as the collective agreement, bonuses and sector-specific regulations (for example, chemicals, pharmaceuticals or food industry) can also impact your total earnings.

In addition to the basic salary, you may also receive shift allowances, depending on the sector and working conditions:
10-15% surcharge for 2-shift work (morning and afternoon shifts)
20% surcharge for 3-shift work (morning, afternoon and night shifts)
30-35% surcharge for 5-shift work (morning, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends)
What is a laboratory technician?
A lab technician is someone who works in a laboratory. They often perform different analyses of certain samples depending on the type of lab they work in. Laboratory technicians often work in chemistry, biotechnology and in medical laboratories or in the food industry. They ensure that research is carried out accurately and that the results are reliable. The duties of a laboratory technician include quality control, researching and developing products and supporting scientific research.

What does a laboratory technician do?
As a lab technician, you perform analyses and experiments to collect data that are used for research or quality control. You will be working with equipment such as spectrometers, chromatographs and microscopes, depending on the laboratory environment you work in. You will prepare samples, perform tests, analyse the results and report your findings. In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining the equipment and ensuring that the working environment complies with safety regulations.

How do you become a laboratory technician?
To become a laboratory technician, you need secondary vocational or higher professional education (MBO/HBO) in, for example, chemistry, life sciences, biochemistry, nutrition or another, related field. Laboratory technicians have often completed an MLO course (secondary laboratory education) or HLO course (higher laboratory education). Accuracy, analytical thinking and technical skills are important to have for this position, in addition to scientific knowledge. Depending on the sector, knowledge of certain quality standards, such as GMP, ISO or HACCP, may be required as well.
