Medical examination

If you apply for a position (or another position) in the LUMC or you wish to join the company emergency response team (BHV) you may have to undergo a medical examination depending on the position you apply for. The Health department is responsible for medical examinations. During the examination the doctor only assesses your suitability for the position at that moment. That is all. The LUMC pays the expenses.

Important to know

You may have to undergo a medical examination when you apply for a position:

• which is physically strenuous, with a risk of occupational disability and occupational disease;
• involving a safety risk concerning your own safety and that of colleagues, patients, students and visitors.
• student nurses
• student anaesthetic assistants
• student radio-diagnostics (X-ray) technicians
• student surgical assistants
• radiology personnel, category A
• personnel who have to wear a compressed air mask
• personnel working with vaccinia
• sterilization personnel A and B

Positions with limited medical examinations

Additionally there are positions requiring a more limited medical examination. During this examination the doctor only checks whether you are sufficiently vaccinated against Hepatitis B. This examination is obligatory for personnel who are regularly in contact with blood of other people, including:

• surgery performing specialists, including surgeons, ENT specialists, gynaecologists and dermatologists
• obstetricians
• operating theatre personnel
• anaesthetists and anaesthetic nurses

Examination from the company emergency response team

Finally, you may be medically examined when you join the company emergency response team (BHV). This examination is repeated after a number of years. The other examinations you only have to undergo once.

What does a medical examination entail?

The level of the examination depends on the position you are applying for and on your health. Often you start by completing a questionnaire after which the company doctor discusses the answers with you. Sometimes a simple physical examination is required, e.g. an examination of your back or joints, or an eye or hearing test. If you are examined because you join the company emergency response team (BHV) you will have to do a cardiac stress test (cycle test).

What happens with the results of a medical examination?

The results of the examination will be given to you first, and as fast as possible, at the latest within 14 days after the examination. If the results are negative, you have two days to withdraw from the job-selection procedure and the examination results will not be forwarded to the ward or department.

In the event of a negative result you may also request a re-examination. A request for re-examination has to be submitted at the latest within 14 days to your managing director or operational manager. The re-examination is always carried out by another company doctor.

Your department or ward (to be) will only be informed of your examination in the following terms: passed, failed or passed conditionally. Should you fail to get the position the examination results will be destroyed.

What are your rights during a medical examination?

You are entitled to receive information on the purpose and the contents of the examination. Additionally, you will be the first to receive the results and you are entitled to request a re-examination.

Your privacy is well protected because the LUMC works in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act (Wet Persoonsgegevens). Under this act you always have the right to consult your own medical file. The company doctor will always first ask your permission before requesting medical information from other doctors.

What are your obligations during a medical examination?

The information you provide has to be true. You only have to provide information the company doctor needs to assess your suitability for the position at that moment. You may refuse to provide any other information.

Expenses

The medical examination is free. You may also be entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses which will be paid on the basis of 2nd class public transport.
