Job description
As Research Funding Officer you are responsible for early identification and creation of opportunities for national and European funding for researchers working in Social Sciences and Humanities. You will be embedded for 50% of your working hours at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) and for 50% at the EUR central grant support office at Erasmus Research Services (ERS).

Your primary responsibility is to scout for research- or project(ideas) and to identify funding opportunities, to provide guidance to researchers in the application process for these grants, to set up a support structure for researchers and to help them write excellent proposals. You help create a culture amongst researchers that stimulates applying for grants, you build and maintain a network with external relations from relevant institutes (a.o. media and creative industry, museums) and act as point of contact for internal and external stakeholders. You work in close collaboration with the ESHCC Research Office (senior research policy officer, research project manager, data steward) and colleagues from the grant support office at Erasmus Research Services.

Main responsibilities:
  • Scout for research project ideas within the faculty of ESHCC;
  • Identify and create opportunities for personal and collaborative research grants at NWO and other national research funders as well as at European level (Horizon Europe);
  • Support researchers to apply for research grants, and coach and help them throughout the application process;
  • Act as first point of contact for ESHCC researchers that want to apply for a grant and organize internal alignment with relevant processes such as financial and project control;
  • Set up support services and toolkit for researchers on national and European grants both within ESHCC as at EUR central level and realize optimal synergy between those;
  • Organize, in collaboration with your colleagues at the ERS grant support office, generic information sessions, trainings and workshops about research grants and more specific in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • Proactively engage with external contacts like partner institutes, societal stakeholders and relevant agencies to anticipate new developments and to help in building consortia
Requirements

Required experience, skills and competencies:
  • Completed education on an academic level and preferably with a doctorate in humanities or social sciences;
  • Several years of relevant work experience in supporting and advising researchers in the application of research grants;
  • Experience in acquiring grants is preferable.
  • Knowledge of the procedures relating to grants from funding schemes;
  • Open personality and capacity to collaborate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Organization sensitive, a good listener, customer/service orientated;
  • An entrepreneurial, hands-on and open attitude; excellent organization skills;
  • Proactive, stress-resistant, ability to deliver under peak performance;
  • Excellent verbal and written command of Dutch and English (CEFR level C1).
You will become a member of the department Erasmus Research Services, a team of approximately 17 people and seconded to the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). You will report to the Director of the Erasmus Research Services and the senior research policy officer of ESHCC.

Conditions of employment
Internationally-oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). We offer a contract initially for one year (0,8-1 fte, full-time appointment is 38 hours). The contract can be extended in case of a positive assessment or turned into a fixed employment contract. Your remuneration will depend on the position, and within that your specific knowledge and experience, and will be calculated on the basis of full-time salary ranging between € 3.746,- and € 5.127,- gross per month (salary scale 11, CAO NU). Erasmus University Rotterdam offers attractive terms of employment, including a holiday allowance of 8%, a year-end payment of 8.3% and 41 holidays per year based on a full-time appointment. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. Moreover, EUR staff members are allowed to make use of the EUR facilities, including the Erasmus Sports Centre and the University Library.

Erasmus Research Services

Erasmus Research Services (ERS) has recently been established as a support organization for researchers in order to achieve the university’s ambitions on research and impact. ERS is there to help researchers during the preparation and execution of research projects. Therefore, a comprehensive set of services is currently being set up encompassing amongst others, grant support, data management support, legal support, ethics, open science and responsible research intelligence. ERS works in close collaboration with research support staff at faculties and other EUR central services. We do so by setting up support communities under coordination of ERS.

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The faculty has three departments:
