Applying for our programs

When do applications open and close?
Applications for
Optiver Sydney’s 2025-26 internship
and
2026 graduate programs
open in early February 2025. As we recruit on a rolling basis, applications will close as soon as the positions are filled. We recommend applying early!

When do your internship programs start and how long are they?

Trading, Research and Risk:

8 weeks over summer kicking off in December 2025. We’ll confirm the start date closer to the program.

10 weeks over summer, kicking off in December 2025. We’ll confirm the start date closer to the program..
When does your graduate program start?
We have two graduate intakes – one in September 2025 for mid-year finishers and another in February 2026.
What working rights do I need to have?
If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or an international student studying at an Australian university, you are eligible for our roles.

What academic background do I need?
We hire candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, particularly those in STEM and quantitative/technical degrees for our campus roles. If you are able to demonstrate the skills and attributes we are looking for, then we strongly encourage you to apply!

Can I apply for more than one role?
We only accept one application at a time so please apply to the role that is your top preference. We’ll progress you based on your preferred role and discuss other interests during your interview if successful.

I made a mistake when applying (e.g. applied for the wrong role, uploaded incorrect resume, selected incorrect graduate year). What should I do?

Assessment

Can I request an extension?
We ask that candidates complete their assessment as soon as they are able, and within the specified deadline. However, if you are unable to complete the assessment within the given deadline, please email us at

How can I best prepare?
Please refer to the

that was sent to you in your confirmation email for guidance on how to best prepare for the application process.
I am having issues with accessing the platform and assessments. What do I do?

Please try the following solutions:

Step 1) Sync Device Time with the Internet (Windows Settings)

• Click on the clock located on the bottom-right corner of your screen.
• Select “Date and time settings.”
• Toggle on the “Set time automatically” option.
• Ensure that the “Set time zone automatically” option is also enabled.
• Restart your device and try logging in again.

Step 2)

Disable any VPN. If you are using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), it might interfere with our system’s authentication process. Please disable the VPN temporarily while attempting to log in

Step 3)

Try a Different Device. Sometimes, login issues can be device-specific. If possible, please attempt to log in using a different device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or another computer. This will help us determine whether the problem is related to your specific device.

The assessment platform shows I already completed assessments time stamped for the same date I was invited, even though I didn’t take them. Is this an error?

We only allow candidates to attempt an assessment at Optiver every 8 months, across all offices and roles. If you have applied to this or a similar role that has the same assessment components within that time frame, the scores from those assessments will carry over until after 8 months from the date of your attempt on that assessment.

I received the email outlining the process stating that I would receive a link to the assessment, but I didn’t receive my assessment link.
It can take 24-48 hours for the assessment to appear in your inbox. If it has been over 48 hours, please make sure you’ve checked your spam, junk, promotions, updates, and other folders for your invitation to the portal. If you still don’t have the invite, please email

Can I use a calculator?
To effectively evaluate your skills, the use of calculators is not permitted during our assessment.
What programming languages can I complete the Software assessment in?
You can complete the Software HackerRank assessment in C++, Java and Python.
What programming languages can I complete the FPGA assessment in?
The FPGA HackerRank assessment will probe your understanding of Digital Circuit Design, FPGAs and a bit of hardware code comprehension – code snippets are given in both VHDL and Verilog.

If I am in late-stage discussions with another company, what is the best way to proceed with my application process at Optiver?

Interview slots are available on Calendly on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional days open up on a rolling cadence, so we recommend checking back daily for new available timeslots. If no slots are available within the next two weeks, please email us at

Am I required to use a specific programming language during the technical interviews for the Software and FPGA interview process?
For our Software technical interviews you are welcome to code in whichever language(s) you feel most comfortable with. For our FPGA technical interviews, you will need to code in either Verilog or VHDL.

Internship Program

Trading Internship
At the beginning of the 8 weeks, our dedicated in-house Education team will deliver a curated series of lectures and coursework on trading fundamentals. You’ll the use this knowledge to develop your own algorithmic trading strategy and deploy in a simulated trading environment, using live market data, for an exciting hands-on experience.

Technology Internship
To set you up for success, our tech internship begins with a bootcamp, which brings you up to speed on trading concepts and our development process. From there you’ll work on live business problems, knowledge share with your peers and partake in some healthy competition. Along the way, you’ll be supported by your teammates, business mentor and our dedicated education team.
